Working for Families
Working for Families is a group of four government payments that help with the cost of raising children. If you're pregnant or have children aged 18 or under, you might be eligible for this financial support - depending on your income, number of children, and family situation.
What is Working for Families?
Working for Families includes a package of tax credits and payments designed to support families with the cost of living.
You may qualify if:
- You have one or more dependent children aged 18 or under
- You are a New Zealand citizen or resident, or your child is a New Zealand citizen or resident
- You earn under a certain income threshold (this varies depending on how many children you have)
Types of payments include:
- Family Tax Credit – paid regardless of whether you're working
- In-Work Tax Credit – for families with paid employment
- Best Start Tax Credit – for families with children aged 0-3 years
- Minimum Family Tax Credit – for low-income working families
How do I apply?
You can apply through Inland Revenue (IRD). You’ll need your IRD number and information about your income and family situation.
