My Top Tips for Travelling with Kids

My Top Tips for Travelling with Kids

With our Cairns trip coming up later this month, I’ve been reflecting on what has worked well for us when travelling as a family. Travelling with little ones can feel daunting, but with a bit of preparation (and a lot of flexibility), it can be an adventure you’ll actually enjoy. Here are my top tips:

1. Choose the right travel pram

We use the Edwards & Co Lucci and it has been a game-changer. It’s super lightweight, easy to fold, and perfect for navigating airports and exploring new places. Having a pram that you can manage one-handed is worth its weight in gold plus it fits into overhead lockers on the plane!

2. Pack snacks – more than you think you'll need

Snacks solve so many problems - boredom, delays, fussy moods. We'll be packing all of the kids favourites and won't be worrying too much if they aren't necessarily the 'healthiest' option.

3. Forget about perfect sleep

Travel and sleep don’t always mix. Instead of stressing, go with the flow. Your child might nap at odd times, or not at all – and that’s okay. Adjust your expectations, and everyone will be a lot happier.

4. Embrace devices (if you're comfortable with it)

We’ve found an iPad loaded with shows and games to be a lifesaver on flights. If you prefer screen-free, something like a Yoto player is fantastic – Elsie loves hers. Long travel days are not the time to be strict about screen time.

5. Pack something new

A couple of new toys or activities tucked away in your bag can be a great distraction during tricky moments. I'll be heading to Kmart before we go to find a few small toys that we don't already have.

6. Stock up on some snacks once you arrive

Once you arrive, find a supermarket and stock up on kid-friendly snacks. There may not always be suitable options available where you're going so it pays to have something on hand! Plus it's cost-effective too!

7. Manage airplane pressure changes

Take-off and landing can be uncomfortable for little ears. For babies, a dummy, breastfeeding or bottle works wonders. Now that Elsie is a bit older, we’re going to try lollipops (there are some healthier options out there too). Sucking helps ease the pressure and makes the whole experience much smoother.

8. Remember you're a team

Travelling with kids can test anyone’s patience. Things won’t always go to plan and that’s normal. The best thing you and your partner can do is support each other, tag team when needed and laugh off the hiccups together.

Final thoughts

Family travel is less about ticking off sights and more about enjoying the experience together – even the messy moments. With the right mindset and a little preparation, you’ll enjoy your family holiday (even though it might not go to plan). This time we are taking 3 grandparents with us - the ultimate travel hack.
